Private English tutoring

We and our fellow tutors who are friends, provide courses based on our background in teaching, business and culture.

We are an alternative to language and business schools and the way they teach. Our clients prefer not to sit in a classroom all day doing grammar or listening to conversation tapes.   Here they are immersed in English life, culture and see a country not found behind a city desk.

We teach people of any age, from any walk of life. From business we have - marketing/sales directors, press officers, project managers. Others include - lecturers, artists, writers, students. We also have children who combine study with any sport or activity.

Our business experience and that of our fellow tutors covers: sales/marketing, project management, corporate communications, charities, fund raising, advertising and law. We tailor the course to what clients want to learn.

Our aim is to make learning as interesting and varied as possible, whether in groups or one-to-one tuition. We use newspapers, radio, film, music, TV, the internet, literature, history, culture and current affairs.

We take trips to historic towns, museums and exhibitions or just walk and talk in the countryside. We can also arrange any number of activities from painting and cooking to tennis and canoeing.

Whether talking, listening, reading, visting places, sitting in the garden or outside a pub in the woods, or just relaxing at home, clients are immersed in English life and culture.

By being treated as family, people immediately feel at ease in the Berkshire countryside. Because they are relaxed and enjoy a different way of learning, they absorb the language all day long.  Few jobs entail a twelve-hour day, yet people here do it without realising.

Good English is vital for anyone who wants to work or go abroad, for any company with international business and for myriad cultural or academic pursuits.

We teach English you can use anywhere – in class, in business, on the telephone, in private or public, when happy or furious, addressing the UN, talking to your shareholders or winning an Oscar.

We are continually expanding our use of Skype to train and teach clients in Europe and from California, Chile to Abu Dhabi.

Our purpose is to impart knowledge in a way which is interesting, useful and enjoyable to you  So we plan our teaching around your needs.

What we teach

For all of the following we use: film, tv, cds/tapes, the radio and internet.

1. business studies –  sales and marketing, public relations, fund-raising, project management; meetings, presentations, speeches, telephone/e-mails and letter writing.

2. history – ours and other cultures, to better understand the world today:
civilisations ancient and modern, empires, independence to the present day.

3. writing/reading – we use newspapers, magazines, books; different literatures and cultures – British, European, Arabic, American, Latin American, worldwide.

4. culture – the arts: film, theatre, music (modern, classical, opera, architecture.
Visit museums, theatres, cinemas; galleries and exhibitions; arrange  personal lessons in  painting, music, sports and other hobbies.

5. current affairs – politics, the media, international relations, developing countries;  interviews, discussions, plays.

6. other subjects – languages, religion, geography, the environment.

How we teach

We concentrate on:

  • listening and speaking – to improve fluency and pronounciation
  • reading – to improve language and  knowledge
  • writing – for clarity of thought and to use the imagination.

1. No one can ‘study’ for more than four to five hours but they can learn for twelve hours a day.

2. Living in an English home, outside the hours of study, you continue to learn, hear and speak all day – in the car, on a walk, visiting places or at the dinner table.

3. When people enjoy themselves and are relaxed, they work harder and learn more.
By going out and doing other things, they see an England the tourist hasn’t time to.

4. There is no better way to learn English and about our way of life.
