The Private English Tutor is an alternative to language and business schools. Our clients are people who would prefer not to sit in a classroom all day doing grammar or listening to conversation tapes. Instead they come to us to improve their English by immersing themselves in English life and culture.

Patricia Monro
We are Peter and Patricia Monro and we teach business people, students, children or anyone else who wants to speak or write better English. When you come to study with us we treat you as a guest in our family home in the Berkshire countryside. We tailor the course to what YOU want to learn, whether it’s business, everyday English or any cultural or intellectual field.
Our aim is to make learning as interesting and varied as possible. We discuss history, culture and current affairs. We make use of newspapers, film, music, TV and radio. We take trips to historic towns, museums and exhibitions or just walk and talk in the countryside. We can also arrange any number of activities from painting and cooking to tennis and canoeing.
We are both experienced teachers and have travelled widely. Peter worked in the world of international finance, publishing, marketing and sales for 25 years and speaks French, Spanish and basic Arabic. Patricia has worked in the charity sector and project management for 25 years and is fluent in French.
Initially it can be daunting to study in a foreign country, so our clients are guests and part of the family, it makes us and them relaxed. The more at ease people are the more they learn, in our case this is twelve hours a day.
Life is the best classroom for languages or any other study !
